2023 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Weekly Commentary (updated June 19, 2023): With 202 submissions for Supporting Actress and 239 for Supporting Actor. If there is only one submission out of the 240 required in any of the categories, only seven candidates will be nominated. Someone big might be on the chopping block… but who?
Three contenders feel guaranteed spots – Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph of “Abbott Elementary” and Hannah Waddingham of “Ted Lasso.”
More than a dozen possibilities compete for the remaining slots.
Past winners and nominees can be considered safe bets like Alex Borstein (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). However, the likes of Juno Temple (“Ted Lasso”) and Cecily Strong (“Saturday Night Live”) face internal competition that could make it difficult to break the lineup.
I worry about newcomers to the lineup like Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) and Jessica Williams (“Shrinking”) who might attract more established Hollywood names. The purity of their performance will hopefully pull them through.
