NielsenThe streaming data for 2022 has been revealed and it revealed a surprise title as the most streamed superhero movie of the year. According to Nielsen, only one Marvel Studios movie made the list of the top 15 streaming movies Eternals ranks number 13 with 4.2 billion minutes watched. Encanto tops the list with over 27.4 billion minutes watched, followed by other animated films such as To blush, Sing 2, Vaianaand Frozen. The Adam Project, Hocus Pocus 2and Don’t look up are also on the list, but there are no other superhero movies.
Meanwhile, a superhero show did end up on the list of the most-streamed original programs, but it was not from Marvel Studios. Last year, the company released Moon Knight, Mrs. Marveland She-Hulk: lawyer. None of those cracked the top 15, though the bloody superhero satire series The boys from Prime Video managed to land at number 11. Netflix’s superhero action series The Umbrella Academy also ranked at number 13.
Eternals standing out as the most streamed superhero movie is a bit surprising considering the lukewarm reception the movie had when it was released last year. The film underperformed at the box office and is among the lowest rated Marvel films on Rotten Tomatoes. But it seems like the movie has gotten a lot more attention with its streaming presence, for what it’s worth.
Is the Eternals sequel coming?
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals and co-wrote the script with Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo. The film, which follows a group of immortal beings who come out of hiding after thousands of years to protect Earth from a great threat, features a cast of superheroes. That includes Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Kit Harington, Slma Hayek and Angelina Jolie.
While there has been no follow-up officially announced by Marvel Studios, there have been many rumors suggesting that Eternals 2 is happening. At one point, Patton Oswalt, who voiced Pip in a post-credits sequence, said a sequel was in the works. Nanjiani, for his part, expressed doubts about the sequel in November, stating that he believed Oswalt was mistaken, although he hoped that Eternals 2 would really happen.
“I really don’t know anything. I’d love to see Kingo come back. I love playing that character,” Nanjiani said on the Bingeworthy podcast. “That one is really fun to play, you’re just in a good mood. You do finger guns, you’re like a movie star – what’s not to love? You’re just in a good mood all the time.”
