Tennessee AG Investigating haunted house featured In Hulu Documentary – Deadline

Tennessee’s Attorney General has shared, ahem, grave concerns about a haunted attraction that was the subject of the recent Hulu documentary Monster Inside: America’s Most Extreme Haunted House.

In a Halloween post on X, the AG’s office revealed that it has sent a letter to Russ McKamey’s McKamey Manor in Summertown, TN to look into the “business practices in operating its ‘extreme haunted attraction.’ This office continues to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of all Tennesseans.”

The office also sent a letter to McKamey, obtained by The Tennessean, that says the tour does not offer visitors a way out, and that they don’t have access to the lengthy waiver which warns of multiple risks. The letter includes this quote from McKamey in the doc: “we’re known for no quitting and no safe wording.”

The attraction’s website claims the experience involves “intense audio, lighting, extreme low visibility, strobe and fog effects, damp and wet conditions, physically demanding environments, close contact with creatures (you might be touched), very real and graphic scenes of horror.” It goes on to say the haunt is not recommended those who are pregnant and claustrophobic, or who have seizures, heart and respiratory conditions.

It also suggests that if you are a “whimp (sic),” you shouldn’t participate, either.

An account belonging to a McKamey responded to the AG post by saying, “haters gonna hate.”

Deadline has reached out to McKamey for comment.

The Hulu doc, which dropped Oct. 12, follows the story of McKamey, the Navy vet turned “master of horror” who created the attraction. Here’s the logline from the doc: “By cultivating an online persona and a cult-like following, Russ was allowed to display his basest instincts and rewarded with online fame and notoriety. Driven by his personal fixations, he turned his backyard haunt into a bona fide torture chamber: videotaping contestants, particularly vulnerable young women, as he sees how far he can push them – both inside and outside of the haunt.”

The doc is from Lion Television US and is executive produced by Allison Corn, Stan Hsue, and Andrew Renzi, who also directed.

On the X account, McKamey tells potential visitors, “let’s get you out here for a tour. I keep getting the same excuses, oh, it’s too tough I’d never make it, I can’t do it, I’m not in good enough shape. It’s fun! That’s why people come back here time and time again.”
